October Community Newsletter
Did you see in your inbox the invitation for all facilitators and board members to attend a Regional Meeting near you? If not, click here to check the schedule and register today!
By now, the students are magical, the websites are updated, mentors have been contacted, everyone is signed up for CEO Connect, and students are discussing what their class business is going to be. Wow! What a busy time of the year!
A few questions to consider...
- How is your mentoring process going?
- Have you solidified potential mentors?
- Have you planned a day for mentors and students to mingle and select potential pairings?
- Do you have a date set to train both mentors and students for the mentoring relationship that will take place in the next 7 months?
- Have you and your facilitator solidified one day each month for a “Mentor Day,” where student and mentors meet (during CEO class time) to visit about what is happening with the class business and their individual businesses? There is already a list of potential topics waiting to be used in the CRC under the “Mentoring” folder!
- Most importantly, don’t forget about the background checks and paperwork that must be completed for your mentors to have contact with students. We strive to always create a safe environment for our CEO students!

Student Recruitment
Do you have a student selection committee formed yet? If not, please do so at your next monthly board meeting.
Student recruitment starts happening in the month of November. Are you, your facilitator, and your students ready to find your 2019 CEO class? Be sure to check out the CRC for all your student recruitment needs and the answers to your questions.
Class Business Funds
Please assign someone on your board to visit your CEO class and discuss the profits from the Class Business with students.
It is vital to set this expectation early in the year. Please help your students understand that the money earned from the class business belongs to your CEO program and not to them personally.
If you, the board, have specific requests for students to consider (scholarship funds, philanthropic giving, loans and grants for individual businesses, etc.) NOW is the time to discuss that with them. Help them understand that you will be looking for and strongly considering their suggestions for what to do with the profits from the class business, but emphasize that the final say is determined by the CEO Board of Directors.
Fall / Winter Social Planning
Why? This is a great opportunity to invite the following list of people to enjoy the fruits of CEO. Let them know how much you appreciate their support and hear from local CEO alumni how CEO has impacted their life in high school, in college and beyond.
- Current Students
- Alumni
- Investors
- Board Members

Schedule a board member(s) to come to class to discuss the use of class business profits. It is crucial to set this expectation early in the year, before the class business is completed. Students should in no way be led to believe that the money gained from the class business will be available for their personal use.
Please help your board to plan a date for your next upcoming social for:
- Current Students
- Alumni
- Investors
- Board Members
Are your students talking about their individual businesses yet?
If not, be sure to take the time to go around the room and allow students to share what their thoughts and/or progress toward their individual business is. This is also great for students who haven’t started to think about it, to see that others have. A great motivator!
Business plans
Yes, it is time to start thinking about the students completing their first business plan on the class business.
- See the “Tips for Students Business Plans” document on the CRC for a full explanation of how to roll out the concept.
- Also, don’t forget to bring in a local expert to explain the different parts of a business plan, as well as the need for them.
Put it on your calendars now and start talking to students about 3 prizes of $2,500 to be given away to the winners. We are looking for students who have a viable business concept and are either certain or on the fence about whether or not to continue their business. There will be an application process, and only a select few will be chosen to exhibit and, hopefully, secure a $2,500 capital injection into their business!
